PUEBLO -

Plans for a massive project to expand the Pueblo Convention Center and Riverwalk got the final approval by City Council on Monday. This comes after months of negotiations with the state.

Pueblo will be getting $35.7 million in state sales tax money to complete this regional tourism project in three stages.

As News5 has reported, the downtown redevelopment project was originally slated for $43 million before negotiations.

The first phase includes expanding the Convention Center with a new exhibition hall. This will make room for Professional Bull Riders University which has apparently already committed to come on board.

City Council President Steve Nawrocki is calling this a historic agreement, as it's the first time they've been able to expand this area.

"All that it's really going to be about is attracting more people to our city and bringing in tourism dollars and continuing to achieve that goal of Pueblo becoming a destination," he said.

Pueblo's Urban Renewal Authority says they hope to break ground on phase one this fall, with the goal of opening by spring of 2018.

"It really says a lot about a community when a community can invest in it's core and it's heart and the Riverwalk is so beloved by the community and so we're just trying to continue to build on that," Jerry Pacheco, Executive Director of Pueblo's Urban Renewal Authority said.

The next phases include expanding the Riverwalk to connect with the Convention Center as well as building a boathouse, parking facilities and an aquatic center.
